Learning to Read and Vision Problems

Question: I read the question from a mother about her daughter not reading in first grade. Some students might not be ready to read yet at that age. However, I believe that you should have suggested that it would be a good idea to have the child's vision evaluated.

My youngest daughter was not reading in first grade, although she loved to be read to and seemed as bright as her older siblings who were reading well by that age. An eye exam revealed that like most children that age, my daughter was far sighted and used eye muscles for focusing at the distance for reading. In her case, her eyes over converged, and the muscle strain caused discomfort, so she avoided reading. She was prescribed glasses to bring near things into focus and learned to read rapidly after that. - Helpful Hint

Answer: Most reading problems are not caused by eye problems; however, it is always smart to investigate this possibility.
