Research on Effectiveness of Homeschooling

Question: In a recent column, you mentioned that study after study shows that home-educated children consistently do better than their peers in public and private schools. Can you direct me to some of these studies so I can research the data for myself? I have just completed my first year of home schooling with my 6- and 9-year-old sons, and I'm very interested in the results of legitimate, objective studies on this subject. - Home Schooler

Answer: The National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) collects and does research on home schooling. You can find out more about this research by reading the institute's booklet, Home Schooling on the Threshold ($4.95). Contact the institute by calling (503) 364-1490, or visit its Web site at www.nheri.org for more information on home-schooling research. Another good site to vist is the Home School Legal Defense Association at www.hslda.org. Then search for "research reports."
