Poor Handwriting and Math

Question: My very bright grandson received a D on a first-grade math test requiring him to write the numbers 1 through 80. He wrote the numbers correctly, but he did not always leave enough space between them or stay precisely on the line. Other teachers who saw the test said it was unreasonable to expect a 6-year-old to do any better. Can you help me? - Granny

Answer: Teachers have different standards. Some are very demanding. Students, parents and grandparents simply have to accept this. All children will receive low grades at times. It is not in your grandchild's best interest to make such a fuss over one paper. You don't want him to become obsessed with grades. Become concerned only when he shows a consistent pattern of low grades.
