Attendance: OK to Take a Family Vacation

I would like to respond to the letter from "Homesick," who wanted to take her children out of school to visit their home state for the holidays. As a teacher who has moved 1,200 miles from home with my husband and three children, I can see both sides of this question. My answer is, by all means, GO!

If your children's teachers provide assignments before you go, have the courtesy to make sure the work is done before the children return to school. You'd be surprised to know how many parents ask for this work ahead of time and fail to have their children complete it. Be prepared to be the teacher for those topics. While most teachers will willingly clarify difficult questions, it is unfair to expect them to reteach your children everything they missed while you were away. While this might translate to a few missed points on a test, the value of seeing Grandma and their cousins at least once a year is well worth it. - Teacher

Answer: Good points!
