Where to Find Inexpensive Summer Programs

Question: What are some ideas of things that my children could do this summer that don't cost a fortune? -- On a Budget

Answer: Unfortunately, money is tight not just on your end but also with the facilities that run children's programs. Thus your research to find programs may take a little longer this year. Start with your school district and see what programs they are offering. Almost all of these programs will be free.

Next, contact your local parks department and see what programs they are offering. Many have an amazing variety of programs that are free or inexpensive. Other good places to look for inexpensive but quality programs for children are the YMCA, the public library, local churches, museums, zoos, colleges, universities, 4-H clubs and scouting groups.

Local community and parenting publication magazines usually have information on a wide variety of local programs for children. You need to investigate early, as many programs fill up quickly.

Try to find things that will expand your children's horizons. You want to find things that are different from what they have been doing all year in the classroom unless they have found an activity very appealing.

Remember to keep in mind that you need to provide your children with at least one program that is academic in nature to keep their school skills sharp, as well as to foster interest in some subject -- old or new. Make a list of all of the possibilities as soon as you can. Then give the list to your children so you can select together the ones that are most appealing. For summer activities to be entertaining and worthwhile, they need to appeal to children.
