Q:

How do I keep my child's math skills solid during summer break?

A:

Throughout the summer, the math skill that you need to concentrate on is computation. This is the area in which elementary students really lose ground during the summer. You will want to do weekly activities that keep these skills sharp until they return to school. Flashcards and worksheets are not likely to be activities that interest most children. You will need to be creative in finding activities that let them work on addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Besides finding math games online or buying them, here are some suggestions:

  • -To keep addition skills sharp, children can play Magic Squares, Twenty-one and dominoes.
  • -To reinforce addition and subtraction skills, have your children play games where they can be the banker.
  • -Play flashcard Bingo using flashcard problems instead of calling out numbers.
