Reading Softly Is a Sign of an Auditory Learner

Question: When my high-school-age daughter does her homework, I hear her reading aloud softly. She has always done this. Are there are any ways to break this habit? Does it slow down her reading speed? - Mom

Answer: Your daughter might be an auditory learner, one who learns best from what she hears. Nevertheless, reading aloud is definitely slowing her reading speed because she can't read any faster than she speaks, which is about 100 words a minute. If your daughter wants to break this habit, she can try reading with a pencil held tightly between her lips; it will fall out if she begins to move her lips. Or she can try chewing gum or sucking on hard candy because it will interfere with her ability to move her tongue and throat to form words.
